Science Pub Night with OMSI

About twice a month, OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) holds Science Pub at either The Mission Theater or The Bagdad Theater in Portland. This cheap and interesting event brings in science and technology industry leaders to share a variety of topics, while enjoying beer and pizza.

One of my favorites so far has been the presentation on the making of Coraline by LAIKA, which was the first stop-motion feature to be conceived and photographed in stereoscopic 3D. The presentation by Brian McLean, Facial Structure Supervisor, focused on the character creation — complete with a viewing of some armatures and a drawer full of facial expressions.

few photos were taken by D. Scott Frey (above, all rights reserved), but I wish I could find the actual presentation. Other past topics have included Autism, gray whales, vitamins, climate change, spiders, and many more.

Tonight I’ll be attending “A Date with Physics,” led by Ralf Widenhorn, a professor in the physics department at Portland State University. It may be a little bit elementary, but I’m sure I’ll leave with some good physics tidbits with which to unimpress my friends. Doors at the Mission open at 5pm, talk 7–9pm. Suggested $3 donation.

OMSI’s site description:

Physics with all its laws, theories, and complicated equations is a science dreaded by many. We have all heard of E=mc2; it sounds smart, but what does it actually mean? How does it relate to me? Do I really need to know?

A young physicist in love is convinced his date wants to know all about physics and will be impressed with his knowledge of the laws of mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, and electromagnetism. What girl has not dreamed of a date where the bottle of wine is a physics experiment and the romantic candlelight is a crucial piece to a physics lab? Find out if he is successful in his pursuit of science and love, or if she runs away screaming. Of course we believe YOU will love the science.

The next Science Pub night, “What Technology Wants,” will be at the Bagdad November 1st.
