LeBron for Nike

In the latest viral spot for Nike, LeBron James gives his 90-second bit on “should I be who you want me to be?” This spot is more genuine (and humorous) than the spot W+K created for Tiger Woods, in my opinion. What do you think?

  1. Normally I refrain from comments but.…

I can’t help it. I have to say this commercial smacks of W+K it’s slick it’s witty and it’s complete BS. This is the type of stuff that makes me happy I do not work in the world of advertisement. LeBron is a joke, the commercial exploits the misfortune of Cleveland, and many hardcore NBA fans. I hate that they play on the controversy and are trying to make him into some sort of monolithic villain. I hate that they seem to be asserting that LeBron only has an allegiance to himself, yet toy with and poke at the fan that wants more than a self absorbed lost soul. It truly is a shame they couldn’t have been more creative than this. You want to see a creative NBA superstar ad? Check out D‑Wade’s spot,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcX7yJSttrU Although the tagline, “dominate another day” is kind of weird because it makes you question whether they are saying not today or today like every other day.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this spot, Jacob. The Tiger spot brought up some distaste for me, rather than this LeBron one. I see what you mean though.
PS — Nice action eye candy on the Wade spot.

  3. I can understand why the Tiger spot brought up distaste for you. I think the major difference between the two, is that the Tiger spot is trying to recover/regain Tigers image where as the Lebron spot is exploiting/mocking his “decision”. Either way I find our cultures obsession of “talent” over hard work and loyalty, sad. I was less impressed with the eye candy aspect of the Wade spot and more so with the fact that they worked in an actual plot, tying into the (then) upcoming Miami Heat’s season and expectations.

Thoughts? Please add.
